Korea’s standard road network (node/link system) aims to efficiently collect and manage traffic information on intelligent transportation systems, improve road operation and management, prepare for changes in the state-of-the-art transportation environment such as responding to the future transportation system, and further improve the convenience of providing traffic information to the public.

The national standard road network system is being updated irregularly by Korean government, and the latest version distributed last May shows a big change compared to previous years. Unlike the existing trend of node/link growth, the new version which adds new standards for building new systems to support C-ITS and autonomous driving services, has increased nodes by more than 5.5 times and links by more than 2.7 times. While the existing intersection which had only one node, most intersection nodes in the new version have changed to more than four nodes, and the entry/exit ramps are all subdivided. In addition, long links show the precision of splitting on a certain standard.

FX-Traffic has set up a rapid response team to quickly and accurately address major changes, and it is ready for systematic analysis and transition for the new version. It has also established a range of expected issues (e.g., compatibility) and countermeasures through consultation with customers such as map and navigation companies. This was possible with our excellent coping skills based on decades of know-how and technology.

Another important factor in this update process is the close response strategy with our partners. Since the revised standard road network system cannot be updated unilaterally, flexible coordination between providers and consumers is essential.

The Traffic Information Research Institute under Formax Network (Formax hereinafter) has been recently selected as a state-support project of 2025 and will be conducting studies in earnest on AI traffic information.

The 2025 Industrial-Academic Collaboration R&D Project is a state-support project to achieve research results through collaboration between companies and universities by utilizing their strong points. Formax applied for the project by proposing a collaboration with Inha University, which has professional manpower and technology in the AI field, and was adopted as a state-support project of the year in recognition of the excellence of the proposed research subject which is “Deep learning-based traffic forecasting model development and validation check for optimal path finding of connected car navigation.”



Formax has already been envisioning a theoretical basis since 2023, and by being selected as a state-funded project, the full-scale research will now be undertaken. Through preliminary research and feasibility verification within this year, the research project plans to conduct full-fledged commercialization R&D from 2026, and it will also serve as an opportunity for our FX Traffic to evolve to the next level.

2025 Seoul Mobility Show, Korea’s biggest mobility show, was held at KINTEX convention centre from April 4 to 13. A total of 451 companies from 12 countries participated in the event, the largest ever, and Hyundai Motor and KIA - Korea’s main car manufacturers - as well as leading foreign brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche and Lotus, all have set up huge booths to welcome visitors.

The main theme of the show was "diverse SDV-based software technologies," and it was notable that the convenient in-vehicle infotainment system, which has been further upgraded through wireless networks, has become a reality.



Mercedes, currently using FX-Traffic’s traffic information (real-time traffic information, road hazard information, etc.), promoted the launch of new models equipped with various technologies. Among them, an infotainment system that matches the world’s top-class luxury SUV can be found in the G-Class, and this model is provided with the real-time traffic information of Formax’s FX-Traffic as well for the Korean market. I would also like to emphasize that FX- Traffic’s Korean traffic information is being used not only in Mercedes, but also in other world-class brands such as Porsche and Audi.

All express bus arrival information in South Korea is provided by Formax Network (“Formax” hereinafter) for several years now. This is because, in order to implement accurate destination (terminal) arrival guidance services, the data should be generated through FX-Traffic’s Intelligent Traffic Information System owned by Formax.
The types of data used for the express bus arrival information system are those of regular bus route, detour route, real-time road speed, road pattern speed and predicted speed, and among them, the pattern speed data includes time-of-day and days of the week speed data, and hourly speed data of special days such as legal holidays and traditional holidays. Besides, the predicted speed data provides accurate arrival information by generating future predicted speed data using prediction techniques based on real-time speed and pattern speed data.
In addition, by adding a special algorithm to the above system, Formax has recently received a patent certification from the Korean Intellectual Property Office. (patent number 10-2767694) This algorithm is a technology of adding time-consuming statistics to the existing system about predicted changes in routes and statistics, and as such, it enables to implement a high-level destination arrival guidance system.
With more than 25 years of know-hows and experiences, Formax’s high quality traffic information system service is recognized with multiple patents, and our efforts of evolving the system to increase satisfaction in express bus travel experience by accurate calculation on ETA will never stop.

Ranked 6th in the 2024 Global Power City Index*, Seoul is a city that more tourists visit as the years go by, where you can experience various cultures besides K-POP and food. During the year-end and New Year’s holidays, in particular, main streets of Seoul are attract many people with lots of events and decorations, so the city runs a system that can manage the crowds in real-time basis and respond quickly to safety accidents.

The crowd density is measured in real time in major tourist areas such as Myeongdong, Itaewon, Seongsu-dong, Konkuk University Station, Hongdae, Gangnam Station and Apgujeong. CCTVs are installed in narrow alleys as well as main roads and streets to detect crowds, measuring the number of people per unit area, and automatically detect risk. When the risk level increases, a text message is sent from the base stations to all individuals within the  area to inform them of a possible danger and safety guards are immediately deployed to prevent accidents that may occur due to crowd.



The city of Seoul has also installed kiosks in the above areas to provide information to people on site. The multi-crowd map is easy to understand as it uses color-coded road guidance to indicate traffic conditions - green for smooth flow and red for congestion.

Crowd and road conditions are inevitably closely related to the crowd congestion ratio. So if you would like to have nice memories and experiences while visiting Seoul during Christmas holiday season, public transportation such as  subway or bus instead of car or taxi could be good option.

Nearly two decades have passed since navigation system began to become popular, and today’s traffic information content provides advanced road guidance through the essential route search data, and it also appears in a characterized form according to the traffic information consumption targets.

FX-Traffic’s mini-map service, launched on Tmoney’s “Taxi Today” app in November 2024, is a service that meets professional needs. Most taxi drivers, who have already established their own personal path data according to the time zone and road characteristics based on their long driving experience, often go to their destinations without being guided by navigation. But, instead of this usual somewhat-cumbersome route guidance, FX-Traffic’s mini-map service which is very intuitive and immediately referenced could be very useful to taxi drivers. Additionally, it can also be quite helpful for delivery drivers, lorry drivers or regular drivers who have to drive more than average as well.



The traffic information provided by “Taxi Today” comes in various forms such as basic road-speed data for route search, long-time accumulated and processed pattern data on road conditions, mini-maps that graphically depict key major road sections, and hazard information on unexpected road conditions, all of which can be experienced at FX-Traffic platform.
