Although the research institute was officially opened in 2014, the start of substantive research dates back to nearly a quarter of a century when our key members set up South Korea’s first traffic information system in 2000, and since then, we have been running businesses through processing and providing diverse traffic data. In order to lighten the heavy traffic near Seoul metropolitan area in South Korea, HOV(High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes are operated selectively on expressways since 1995 for vans with six or more passengers and buses, inducing people to use the public transportation rather than private cars. The range of application differs whether it is a weekday or a weekend. For example, Gyoengbu Expressway, South Korea’s main highway between Seoul and Busan with the highest frequency of use, operates HOV lane of 56km for weekdays and 134km for weekends, and as for Yeongdong Expressway between Incheon and Gangneung, it has relatively shorter section of 26.9km operated only on weekdays.



Although HOV lanes are operated on Korean highways, most navigation services provide HOV drivers the route guidance to which only the regular-vehicle traffic information is reflected. Let’s imagine that a group of seven friends plan a holiday trip together in a nine-seater vehicle. If the route guidance for regular vehicle is the only information available, unnecessary detour guidance can be given to the driver. Or if he takes the HOV lane right away as he merges onto the highway and finds it completely jammed, the van will be stuck in the first lane and find it difficult to take alternative routes. But, what if the driver could select the HOV option on the navigation? If so, it would be the best route guidance with the most necessary traffic information.

The population of South Korea is largely centralized in the capital area, up to more than 50%, and it causes huge traffic jams on expressways, especially during summer holidays and traditional national holidays every year. As of February 7, 2024, the expressway of the country has a span of 5,016.6 km in total. Although the highway network is quite tight compared with the nation’s land area, additional expressways are constantly built in order to reduce traffic congestions clustered in the metropolitan area, and consequently, expressways are continuously increasing.

Increasing highway construction is the immediate cause of making changes to highway routes. Currently, 1,700 express buses are operated per day on average and there are 15 routes from Seoul to Busan, the second largest city in South Korea situated in the southeastern part of the peninsula, and still new routes appear perpetually during big holiday seasons because drivers prefer detours to avoid traffic jams.

Evolution of basic mobility functions of vehicle is a ‘basic’ issue when we talk about automobiles today. ‘Talking Cars’ - SDV with AI-LLM - was a big issue in the last CES 2024, and it seems to be coming to the market one of these days, and if it does, it would be the nearly perfect future car we can imagine - a car that can be controlled under the conversations between human and vehicle. We usually check and guess the time of arrival before leaving to some destination, and frequently share it with our family, friends or colleagues in our daily life. Most vehicle navigation systems today give us directions based on the real-time traffic information, and the ETA(estimated time of arrival) generally has not much error unless unexpected variables occur en route.
